I have no network issues that I have particularly noticed apart from one program or notification (I forget what it was specifically) suddenly telling me that my internet was slow, which it's never done before. It didn't seem very important. All the other troubleshooting I've tried to do for this problem is in regards to people's networks being unidentifiable while also not giving them internet access, but that isn't the problem I have. I've looked, but could not find a setting. I am guessing that Windows is really using the MAC address of the router to identify the network, and it just assigns a name for that, a name that sometimes is the SSID if there is WiFi through that router.Īnd, no, I don't know how to change the windows assigned name for the network. If you replace your router, but use the old SSID with the new router, Windows will see that as a new network, and will name it something like "SSID-2" (except with your actual SSID). If it happens to be a WiFi network, it will use the SSID unless there is a conflict. I'm pretty sure that Windows is assigning a name to each network. My ethernet connection is identified with the same name as the SSID that I haven't used since 2009. More recently, I stopped using a second router behind the ISP one, and started using ethernet directly (better performance). I used my own router behind the ISP router, and used WiFi from there. I briefly connected my laptop to its WiFi, just for testing. My current ISP connection dates from 2009. You are seeing the Windows assigned name for your network which happens to be identical to the SSID. Slightly longer answer: you are not seeing the SSID. Yes, I have googled this but all I find is how to forget WIRELESS, not WIRED connections. I noticed that the wired connection also kept the old SSID, so this is not an issue related to router manufacturer but a Windows issue. How can I "forget" that network so that it will get the correct name?Īnd by the way, in all this I discovered that this happened also with the Belkin router at some point when I needed the change the SSID due to a device refusing to connect to the original SSID. After I did a factory reset to the router and configured it again, the wireless SSID (as shown in the wireless networks available in the computer, my cell phone and TV) was correct as per my configuration but the wired connection still shows the old SSID. My computer is connected via Ethernet cable to the router and the wired network connection showed the old SSID as the network identification. When I first installed and connected, it still had the SSID and setup from the previous owner. I was recently given a used Netgear router which I installed in place of an existing Belkin router.
